Public Speaking Tip #1

Who v. That

whothatThis is really quite simple…

When referring to people, use WHO.

When referring to things, use THAT.

While I could leave the whole conversation right there, it bears pointing out that the music industry seems to be trying to destroy the English language. It pains me to listen to music using horrible grammar and then hear my children repeat it thinking that it’s correct.

As a professional public speaker, it drives me over the edge to hear other well-known speakers making basic grammatical mistakes such as, “People that…” instead of “People who…”.  For all those WHO use THAT when speaking about people, all I ask is that you try to pay attention to proper grammar. Thank you.
